Not only does 2025 mark NRG’s 10-year anniversary, but it also marks a decade for one of NRG’s longest-tenured team members, John McDaniel. Over the past decade, John has played a key role in shaping NRG Realty Group as a company – both through his deal-making success and the examples he sets.

Getting Started in Commercial Real Estate

John stepped into commercial real estate right after college, though he was no stranger to property management – managing a few single family homes and retail properties during college.

While working in the industrial division at NAI Robert Lynn, John had a shared listing with a former co-worker that caught the attention of Justin Dodd, NRG’s President & Managing Broker. After a typical broker/agent call and a few follow-up questions via email, John noticed the logo with the oil derrick from Justin. He immediately picked up the phone to ask Justin about the logo. “I asked about the derrick, and Justin said he only worked with Oil & Gas companies. I said, ‘We’re going to lunch tomorrow.’ We met, and I told him I was coming to work for him,” John explained.

John joined NRG on December 15, 2015 – a decision that would shape the next decade for both him and the company.

Building a Vision, One Deal at a Time

When John first came aboard, he didn’t have a set picture of where the company was heading. What he did know was that Justin was sharp, driven, and had identified what the industrial industry in the Permian Basin was missing – a top tier real estate partner. “I just knew I was working with a super-smart guy and the possibilities were endless.”

Those possibilities quickly began turning into milestones. John recalls one early “home run” with Justin – a major blend-and-extend deal that remains a standout moment in his career.
“The company/client we were working with had filed for bankruptcy but was still a viable tenant. We helped them reduce their rent by a staggering amount, and the final amount was a major success for both the client and NRG. What a great day!”

Growing Through Challenges

John describes NRG’s growth as steady and exciting – with the usual growing pains but nothing that couldn’t be overcome together. “Life changed when Jenna Gause and Layton Lowry joined the team,” he says, noting how the group’s dynamic evolved and strengthened into a “real team”.

As the company expanded John watched the team transform into a polished, high-performing operation. “Once marketing (Jenna) joined us, our entire process became so top tier – we blew the competition away. Then Layton joined, and it felt like a real team. Since those early years we’ve added more agents and coordinators who continue to elevate the business. People come and go, but we remain a solid team and will continue to grow.”

What stands out most for John is the culture:
“No angst, no drama. Everyone shares similar values and wants everyone to succeed. Justin has done a great job building a great team and I’m honored to be along for the ride.”

Guiding Principles & Client Impact

Across ten years, industrial real estate has taught John a simple rule he lives by: Treat people the way you want to be treated.
He believes firmly in taking the high road, doing the right thing, and never allowing your integrity to come into question.

His approach to client relationships is just as straightforward, “do what you say you’re going to do. Under-promise and over-deliver.”

Meeting clients on-site remains one of his favorite parts of the job because of how naturally it strengthens the relationship.

From colleagues across the NRG team to partners outside the organization, many have played a role in his journey and in NRG’s growth – something John acknowledges with deep appreciation.

Advice for the Next Generation

John’s advice for newcomers in commercial real estate comes from experience, “don’t give up too soon. The first year will knock you around, but you have to stick it out and keep throwing darts at the board. So many people quit just a few months too early.”

Looking Ahead

In the coming years, John plans to stay active, make more deals, and continue supporting NRG’s growth.

He also recognizes the industry is ever-changing – with AI bringing both efficiency and new challenges. “AI will streamline tasks but may also introduce some chaos while it finds its place in the industry,” he says. “We’re ready to adapt like we always do.”

Life Outside the Deal Flow

When he’s not working with clients or touring industrial sites, John enjoys time outdoors – with a particular love for shotguns and shooting sports.

A Decade of Dedication

John’s ten years with NRG Realty Group represent more than longevity – they represent loyalty, integrity, and a belief in building something bigger than yourself. His influence on NRG’s culture, its clients, and success is immeasurable, and NRG is proud to celebrate this milestone with him.

Here’s to ten incredible years – and more ahead.
